about

BEATING DRUM presents HEAR MY VOICE in a new collection of recordings produced by Piers Faccini and released in limited edition 12” vinyl, Beating Drum aims to carry the torch for an eclectic and innovative 21st century form of songwriting. Behind every beautiful song lies an original story and with this new series, the label aims to champion the cause of some of today’s exciting new voices.
For Hear My Voice, the label aims to give a platform to a select group of new and exciting artists the label encounters. Each Ep, beautifully conceived by house designer Uncle O will feature a portrait of the artist drawn by Piers Faccini. The first releases will feature three distinct voices, Tui Mamaki, Gnut and Horsedreamer.

HORSEDREAMER is the voice of the aclaimed UK based Trinidadian poet and singer Roger Robinson. In this incarnation, the prolific artist and singer, known also for fronting the cult band King Midas Sound, puts words and voice to compositions by Piers Faccini. Horsedreamer is their conversation and the story of their ancestral roaming. This is their second ep for the label.
This ep of new songs champions the anti hero and draws parallels with radical survival in the present political and economic climate. Taking its influences from Narcocorridos and outlaw country as well as far western folklore, the ep forges a new subgenre that Horsedreamers today call gangsta folk.

Track Name: Sweetmeat
You’re a hungry grey wolf stalking
I can feel your breath on me
You can see me stumble walking
Know you want me for your meat.

I hear the breaking of twigs
I know you’ll soon do me in

Feast on the sweetmeat of my feelings
Don’t you choke on my broken heart

I can see the vultures circling
And the sky won’t bring me rain
Dust inside my chest is hurting
Every second brings me pain
Black halo over my head.
Know that I’ll fight till I’m dead.

Feast on the sweetmeat of my feelings
Don’t you choke on my broken heart
Track Name: A Thousand Stallions
Tell my son I’ll soon be home
Tell my girl that I can’t live alone

Many months I’ve been away
When I get back I’ll be back home to stay

Like a thousand stallions
Running home
Ain’t gonna stop
For wind or rain or snow

Snows keep drifting in my eyes
Been too long from tears to goodbyes

Food and love and lots to say
Ride this night to bright sparks of day

Like a thousand stallions
Running home
Ain’t gonna stop
For wind or rain or snow

Searching for gold far away from home
Riches don’t make you feel alone
Read from the good book every day
I ask for the master to show me the way

Like a thousand stallions
Running home
Ain’t gonna stop
For wind or rain or snow
Track Name: Billy The Kid
Born in a dust bowl
Wrapped in sand and grit

Hungry and angry
That he lived the life he lived

His mama died screaming
As they closed her coffin lid

His father was diving
Down a bottle of gin

But then without a warning
A neighbor tried to whore him
With no one left to watch him
Grabbed daddy’s gun and shot him

When Billy Was A Kid

He made the whole world
Bend towards his will

Made sure everyone
Would suffer like he did

Rode into town and killed
Who he had to kill

As they lay dying
He’d ride off with a grin

But then without a warning
A sheriff aimed and shot him
The whole town stood and watched him
And said at last we got him.
